Read with Ms Tundun

A grassroots literacy drive bringing books and pride to Afrcan kids.

Introduction

Across Africa and many parts of the world, children face significant learning challenges, with millions unable to read or comprehend simple texts by the age of 10. According to UNICEF, over 70% of primary school children in some African countries experience learning poverty. Barriers such as poor access to quality education, lack of books, language exclusion, and insufficient culturally relevant content continue to deepen this crisis.

About Read with Ms Tundun

Read with Ms Tundun is an inclusive literacy and culture program that delivers engaging reading sessions to children across Africa and the diaspora. The initiative combines storytelling, book access, interactive reading materials, and African cultural education through schools, community hubs, and pop-up reading events.

At its core is the belief that every child deserves to be read to and to see themselves in the stories they hear. The program works not only to provide books but to make reading a joyful, communal experience especially in areas with limited literacy support.

Our Objectives

  1. Promote a Love for Reading:Spark a lifelong interest in reading among children aged 4–10 across diverse backgrounds.
  2. Celebrate African Culture Through Stories:Use books, songs, proverbs, and storytelling to teach children about African traditions and languages.
  3. Ensure Access to Inclusive Reading Opportunities:Reach children in schools, orphanages, underserved communities, and homes.
  4. Build Reading Communities:Engage families, educators, and volunteers to create nurturing reading environments.
  5. Bridge the Literacy Gap:Support children in becoming confident, independent readers using phonics-based, interactive, and culturally relevant materials.
